How we work
A sourcing model built for procurement teams.
Winnington is a UK-based packaging consultancy and supply partner. We do the work of finding, developing, validating and managing supply, and you keep one accountable relationship.
01 · The process
Six stages from specification to supply.
Each stage has a defined output, so you always know where a requirement stands and what’s needed from you.
-
01
Send us your specification
One SKU is enough to start. A spec sheet, drawing, photo or physical sample all work.
- You provide
- Specification, drawing, photograph or sample, plus annual volume.
- Winnington does
- Log the requirement, check we have what we need and confirm the brief back to you.
- Outcome
- A confirmed brief.
-
02
We assess the requirement
Our team reviews the structure, format, print and process conditions.
- You provide
- Answers to any technical questions.
- Winnington does
- Identify what matters: barrier, seal, dimensions, line compatibility and compliance.
- Outcome
- A short summary of what ‘equivalent’ means for this SKU.
-
03
We identify manufacturing capability
We match the requirement to manufacturers in our network with the right equipment and certification.
- You provide
- Nothing further.
- Winnington does
- Brief suitable manufacturers and collect technical proposals and data sheets.
- Outcome
- A shortlist, or a clear statement that we can’t improve on your current supply.
-
04
Samples and technical validation
Samples or trial material are tested against your requirement and on your line where needed.
- You provide
- Trial time on your equipment, where appropriate.
- Winnington does
- Supply samples with data sheets and compliance documents, and coordinate the trial.
- Outcome
- Evidence that the alternative performs.
-
05
Commercial comparison
A like-for-like comparison of price, MOQ, lead time and delivery terms.
- You provide
- Your decision criteria.
- Winnington does
- Set out the commercial terms clearly, including currency, Incoterms and lead time.
- Outcome
- A decision you can defend internally.
-
06
Managed supply
Winnington manages orders, quality, documentation and logistics as your single UK point of contact.
- You provide
- Forecasts and purchase orders.
- Winnington does
- Place and track production, manage quality and coordinate delivery into the UK.
- Outcome
- One accountable relationship for every SKU we manage.
02 · What you get
What Winnington takes off your plate.
Working with manufacturers directly, especially overseas, means managing language, time zones, documentation, quality and freight. We handle all of it for you.
- 01
International sourcing
Manufacturing and supply options matched to each requirement, instead of dependence on a single production site or region.
- 02
Commercial benchmarking
An evidence-based view of whether your current packaging could be sourced more competitively.
- 03
Technical matching
We work from your existing specifications, samples and drawings, so equivalence is checked, not assumed.
- 04
Multi-SKU management
One commercial relationship that can manage many packaging lines across categories.
- 05
Quality & compliance
Documentation, traceability and certification checked before supply and kept current after.
- 06
Supply-chain management
We coordinate between manufacturers and your site, including production scheduling, shipping and import documentation.
- 07
UK account management
You deal with Winnington in the UK, not with several overseas manufacturers directly.
03 · Four ways to start
Not every requirement is a like-for-like.
Most customers start with a benchmark. The same process supports four kinds of work.
-
01
Source
Reliable supply of packaging manufactured around your requirements.
-
02
Improve
Review existing packaging to identify opportunities around performance, cost, material or supply.
-
03
Develop
Support from initial requirement through specification, trial and production.
-
04
Transition
Explore more recyclable or efficient packaging structures without ignoring performance or commercial reality.
04 · Procurement questions
Straight answers.
The questions procurement and technical teams ask us first.
Quality & complianceCan you supply my packaging?
Winnington is a packaging consultancy and supply partner: we source, develop and manage packaging made by specialist manufacturers. Send us the requirement and we’ll tell you whether we can supply it. If we can’t, we’ll say so.
Do you work with smaller businesses and start-ups?
Yes. Some customers buy at scale; others are launching their first product. Minimum order quantities vary by format and process. We’re clear about them from the start, including when a format only makes sense at higher volumes.
Can you match my existing specification?
That’s where we start. We work from your spec sheet, drawing or a physical sample, identify the parameters that matter (structure, barrier, seal, dimensions, print) and only propose an alternative once samples have been validated against them.
Can you handle my volumes?
Capacity is confirmed per SKU with the manufacturer before we quote. We’d rather tell you a volume doesn’t fit than overcommit.
Where is my packaging manufactured?
Wherever the best fit for the requirement is. We source internationally and choose manufacturers on quality, technical suitability, cost, capacity, lead time and compliance. You’ll know the country of manufacture for every SKU, and manufacturer details are shared during qualification.
What certifications do your manufacturers hold?
That varies by manufacturer and site, so we confirm it for each SKU. Where your product needs it, we look for certification such as the BRCGS Global Standard for Packaging Materials or ISO 9001, check the certificate’s status, scope and grade on the issuing body’s directory, and share copies during qualification.
How do you control quality?
Through signed-off specifications, colour standards, declarations of compliance, batch traceability and a defined non-conformance process. Nothing changes in material or process without prior notice and your approval.
What are the lead times?
They depend on the format, the print process and whether cylinders or tooling already exist. We confirm lead time in writing for each SKU as part of the commercial comparison, before you commit.
Can you improve my commercial position?
Sometimes. The review is designed to find out. We compare like for like, including MOQ, lead time and landed cost, and if your current supply is already competitive, we’ll tell you.
Can you manage multiple SKUs?
Yes. That’s the model. Customers typically start with one or two SKUs and extend once supply is proven. One Winnington account can cover many lines across categories.
How reliable is international supply?
We plan around realistic transit times, agree forecasts and safety stock where needed, and coordinate import documentation. Where a SKU is business-critical, a second qualified source can be developed.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. Specifications and commercial information are used only to assess your requirement, and your company isn’t identified to manufacturers without your agreement.
What does the Packaging Review cost?
